His research and teaching program is focused on Southeast Asia, with special emphasis on Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam. He was Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies between 2002 and 2005. He has written over 50 academic papers and four books on the economic problems of Southeast Asia.
