Jay LaMonica

Executive Producer
America Tonight
Al Jazeera America

In a special off-the-record talk, veteran news and documentary producer Jay LaMonica will reflect on his long experience interpreting world realities to American audiences and his new challenge to correctly interpret the American reality for a complex foreign network -- Al  Jazeera -- with a special world perspective rarely heard in this country until now.

LaMonica’s career took off during the Iran hostage crisis in 1979 when he supported Ted Koppel in creating the ABC News’ Nightline, where they collaborated for 15 years to bring in-depth interpretation of world events nightly on ABC. At Nightline, he reported from from Central Asia to the Middle East; from southern Africa to the secret nuclear cities of Siberia.

LaMonica went on to conceive, produce and write dozens of award-winning programs for ABC, PBS, Discovery Channel and CNN. These have been recognized by by nine Emmys, six Peabodies, and awards from the Overseas Press Club and other groups.  At the Discovery Channel, he produced cutting-edge documentaries with Ted Koppel on subjects as diverse as the threat from Iran (2007 Emmy) and the emergence of China.
