Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity is widely known for producing a major political shakeup in 2014 that disrupted corrupt political networks, triggered Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, and sparked a conflict with Russian-backed separatists in the Donbas. Meanwhile, new generations of Ukrainians have formed increasingly powerful civil society organizations tasked with holding their government accountable. Heavily dependent on both the financial and diplomatic assistance of their international partners (especially the United States), civil society actors face a number of obstacles in their fight for democracy.
