The Venue for this in-person event will be in the Assembly Room (Main Floor) of The Concourse Hotel, 1 W. Dayton, Madison WI  53703.

Parking is available at the Concourse ramp (enter on Dayton St.) or the public ramp directly across Dayton St. (enter on Dayton, Johnson, or Carroll Sts.) or on the street.

Reception with appetizers and cash bar 6:30 - 7:00, presentation with Q&A 7:00 - 8:00.

Mr. Akar Patel will present:  "The Case for a New India 2047:  Economic Reality and Ambition"


Mr. Patel is a noted human rights activist, journalist and author of multiple books focusing on politics, society, and culture in India.  From 2015 until 2019, he served as head of Amnesty International in India and continues to serve as Chair of its Board of Directors.  

He is a syndicated columnist who has edited English and Gujarati newspapers. His books include 'Why I Write', a translation of Saadat Hasan Manto’s Urdu non-fiction (Tranquebar, 2014), 'Our Hindu Rashtra: What It Is. How We Got Here', a study of majoritarianism in India and Pakistan (Westland, 2020), 'Price of the Modi Years', a history of India after 2014 (Penguin Random House, 2021), 'The Anarchist Cookbook', a guide on why and how to protest (HarperCollins, 2022) and the novel 'After Messiah' (Vintage, 2023). His work reimagining South Asia, 'The Case For Optimism', is out in 2025.

  • All registrations and payments for events must be made online with a credit card. We will not be able to accept checks as payment for event registrations.
  • Registrations are confirmed only if payment is received before the registration deadline.
  • Only those with confirmed registrations will be admitted to a program.
